Blacking out

The verb “caviarder” means to censor by blackening passages in a text to make it unreadable.

This twentieth-century expression refers to Russian practices during the reign of Nicholas I.

Censorship was practiced using ink to hide certain passages. Ink was quickly associated with caviar, due to its black color and Russian origin.
