The grey babies

ELISABETH TAYLOR

Beluga caviar was a favorite of Elizabeth Taylor, who nicknamed its gray grains “grey babies!” This jewel-lover adored the black pearls of this creamy-flavored caviar from the world’s most sought-after Huso Huso sturgeon.

The actress used to enjoy it for breakfast, and is said to have invented a most unusual “caviar sandwich.”

The recipe? Unpeeled potatoes, coated with oil and baked in the oven, from which part of the flesh is removed after cooking (the mashed potatoes are saved for another meal). The skin is then topped with crème fraîche and three spoonfuls of “grey babies.” Elisabeth Taylor enjoyed these sandwiches in bed, served on a silver platter with a glass of champagne!
